If you’re an ardent nature-nut, then you need to add Pocomoke State Forest out on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to your must-visit list. It can be a bit of a hike to get out there, but we’re guessing that you’re not exactly opposed to that idea. Pocomoke claims some of Maryland’s most ancient woodlands, over 25 miles of hiking trails, and even an iron smelting furnace that’s been standing since the late 1800s, making it absolutely perfect for your next outdoor adventure.
Maryland’s Eastern Shore is home to some of the oldest cypress swamps in the state. The trails of Pocomoke State Forest Park will lead you right through their heart. There are over 25 miles of trails to explore.
The trails also wind up into clusters of pine and oak, bringing you on a complete journey through what seems like completely disparate ecosystems. There’s even a trail that will lead you through a forest community that developed on an inland sand dune.
There’s nothing like watching the sun rise through the trees over a frozen river - perfect for that silent reconnection with nature we all crave from time to time!
The Pocomoke River is also home to all sorts of wildlife thanks to the nearby Pusey State Game Preserve. If you’re lucky you may get to see wild turkey, whitetail deer, or even otters like this one taking a dip in the summer breeze.
