If you’ve spent much time in the Peach State, especially after dark, you’re well aware of how many haunted places in Georgia there are. Allegedly, the entire historic district in Savannah is just teeming with ghosts, and places like Atlanta’s fabulous Fox Theatre have more than their share of spooky legends, too. But our haunted locales aren’t limited to our bigger cities. Some of our most historic small towns are also filled with spirits if you believe the stories. One of the most haunted small towns in Georgia is Covington. This city’s population is around 14,000, so, in truth, it’s a little on the large side for a “small town,” but the label of “haunted” most definitely fits, as you’ll see below:
Covington is in Newton County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
The little city has plenty of historical structures, and some of them may look familiar to you.
Over the last few decades, locations around town have been featured in a variety of TV shows and films, including The Dukes of Hazzard, In the Heat of the Night, My Cousin Vinny, The Cannonball Run, and The Vampire Diaries.
The Gaither family was a popular one in town for many generations, but their fortunes started to turn in the late 1800s, when a number of tragedies befell the family. The property is now used for events throughout the year, and on several occasions, people have reported seeing faces in the windows, though the home is empty. Various paranormal investigators have examined the home and found evidence of spirits lurking within.
There are several cemeteries in Covington, GA, and like many historic graveyards, most are surrounded by legends of ghosts.
