Idaho’s college towns are some of the best in the country. From the University of Idaho located in Moscow to Boise State University in Boise, you simply can’t go wrong. But located in southeastern Idaho may just be the most charming college town in Idaho — Pocatello. Home to Idaho State University, this town has a little something for everyone from shopping and dining to history and nature — it’s delightful in so many ways.
Pocatello is located in southeastern Idaho, just south of Idaho Falls and Blackfoot. It is known as the “Gateway to the North” and while not a super small town, it still has a friendly, hometown vibe.
Pocatello is best known as home to Idaho State University. This university was founded in 1901 and has since become one of only six institutions in the entire country that offers options from technical certificates to professional degrees.
While the college certainly is a major focus of this Idaho city, there is so much more to see and do. For example, you can spend some time walking around historic downtown Pocatello where you’ll find all types of specialty shops and restaurants.
This award-winning restaurant has been serving Pocatello residents since 1961 and is where you can enjoy family-style meals made using homemade Italian recipes.
If you are craving a sweet treat, I recommend visiting Scoops N Sliders, an ice cream shop with dozens of flavors of homemade ice cream. You may even want to try a slider, which is a scoop of ice cream between two homemade cookies.
Spending time outdoors is easy in Pocatello and it is all thanks to the City Creek Trail System. This incredible trail system includes thousands of acres of public land to explore. Bike or hike this vast outdoor area — it is totally up to you.
And while there is so much to see and do, no matter what you choose, you’ll find that Pocatello is one charming college town in Idaho. It’s delightful in so many ways.
