Tucked away in the southeastern part of the state is one of the most beautiful small towns in Idaho — Swan Valley. While this is one town I love to visit during the summer months, there is nothing like a day trip during the fall. The fall foliage in this area comes alive and it’s picturesque in every way. Plus, while certainly small, this community is home to the most stunning outdoor areas. See for yourself why the charming small town of Swan Valley is absolutely perfect for a fall day trip.
Swan Valley is one of the smaller towns in Idaho. It is home to approximately 200 residents and is located in the southeastern part of the state, not far from Grand Teton National Park and Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The small size of the town doesn’t keep people away (me included!). This town sits right on the banks of the South Fork of the Snake River and is surrounded by multiple mountain ranges. While beautiful all year long, the fall is when this town truly comes to life.
During a fall day trip, you must visit Fall Creek Falls, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Idaho. When fall foliage is at its peak, the waterfall and surrounding area are surrounded by vibrant colors and it creates a scene that you’ll never want to forget.
You can also take a short drive outside of town to Palisades Reservoir. Enjoy a scenic drive to capture views of the fall foliage or my personal favorite — go for a hike.
If you are looking for a longer day hike, consider the Palisades Creek Trail to Lower Palisades Lake. This is a 9.9-mile out-and-back trail that is magical during the fall months. With a stream, small waterfalls, and mountain views — this is a slice of heaven.
If you want to explore the area a different way, visit Swan Valley Outfitters where you can enjoy a trail ride through some of the most beautiful landscapes.
If you are hungry during a visit to Swan Valley, step inside The Pantry Barn where you will find a sweet treat for every member of the family. And, if you plan to turn your fall day trip into an overnight adventure, check out one of the nearby vacation rentals.
