Idaho has some incredible, beautiful, and historic buildings that are always worth checking out. But, tucked away in one of northern Idaho’s state parks is the oldest building in the Gem State — Mission of the Sacred Heart. Dating back to the 1850s, this church is still standing tall and just as beautiful and remarkable as it was decades ago. Today, you can visit this breathtaking structure, get a glimpse into the past, and receive an educational experience like nowhere else in Idaho. The oldest building in Idaho is one destination that I strongly recommend you place on your bucket list.
Coeur d’Alene’s Old Mission State Park is one of the most unique state parks in Idaho. Located in Cataldo, in northern Idaho, it is the perfect day trip destination.
While there are a handful of things you can do at this park, an absolute must is to visit the Mission of the Sacred Heart, the oldest building in Idaho.
The Mission of the Sacred Heart was built by Catholic missionaries and members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe sometime between 1850 and 1853. Today, it is placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
As soon as you arrive in the area, you will be greeted with a stunning view. The historic church is set in the midst of a stunning landscape with mountains and trees surrounding it.
If you wish to step inside and learn more about this church, it’s history, and the people who built it, ranger-led tours are available.
You can also spend some time in the state park’s visitor center where you’ll walk through various exhibits, ask rangers questions, and browse a gift shop.
Other features at the state park that you won't want to miss include a restored Parish House and a historic cemetery.
